My practice is predominantly photographic, albeit in a very wide sense. I use a variety of processes, from pinhole to digital, including alternative and hand-coated processes, anaglyphic 3d, photorealist painting, video and sculptural constructions and installations. An ongoing strand through my work is the attempt to convey 3 dimensional spaces, objects and time through still photography, centered on my own domestic space and personal life. I work across three main genres:
The Self-Portrait. Images documenting and exploring my physical self, possessions, living spaces, relationships, sense of humour and circumstances in life to metaphorically represent ‘everyman’.
Domestic Interiors (including still life). Exploring human interest in, and our psychological pull or drive, to see and critique the habitat, habits and behavior of others in the individual ‘private’ worlds of their own domesticity. The interiors I present are sometimes populated and represent everyday life.
I often use still lives as they exist in their domestic settings to convey an emotional and psychological state. Alternatively, in the still lives I set up, many use the reflective and refractive properties of glass to explore colour and light.
The Nude. I attempt to make images of both sexes that are beautiful, interesting and challenging; that complicate the allure/repulsion, sexual context and propriety of the naked body, I am fascinated by attitudes around public and private nudity, and the power and controversy that the body’s natural state can elicit, both in everyday life and art history. I am interested by the particularities of exploring representation of the naked body as a heterosexual man.
Residencies.
In collaboration with artist Paul Brewer, I have undertaken several residencies using his mobile panoramic box camera, which is operated by two people working inside of it, as both a teaching and creative tool with various colleges, schools and artistic groups.
